EU to Outlaw Bayer CropScience Pesticide Thiacloprid

Farmers in the European Union will have one fewer seed-coating insecticide to fall back on after representatives from the bloc’s member countries agreed the substance thiacloprid should be banned.

A draft EU rule formally rejecting a Bayer CropScience bid to secure reauthorization for thiacloprid after its current authorization runs out on April 30, 2020, was approved by a regulatory committee of EU national representatives Oct. 22.

The European Commission, the EU’s executive arm, said it would formally adopt the final rule prohibiting thiacloprid later this year.
