EU Regulators Continue Fight Over Poland’s Retail Tax

EU regulators are appealing a court decision allowing Poland to reintroduce a sales tax that would collect millions from the country’s largest retailers.

The European Commission announced July 25 it will appeal an EU General Court decision that rejected a 2017 commission finding that the tax was illegal state aid. The Polish law’s three rates taxed retailers based on the size of their revenue. It was suspended after the commission launched an investigation in September 2016 into whether the tax targeted larger retailers and benefited smaller companies.
