EU Moves to Outlaw PFAS Substances to Prevent Use as Substitutes

The European Union moved forward with a de facto ban on a family of highly persistent but little-used PFAS chemicals as a preemptive strike to prevent their use as substitutes for other outlawed PFAS.

Opinions drawn up by the European Chemicals Agency’s scientific committees backing the ban on perfluorohexanesulfonic acid (PFHxS) and related substances would be forwarded to the European Commission, the EU’s executive arm, for a formal decision, the agency said Wednesday.
