EU Lawmakers Push for Global Animal Test Ban for Cosmetics

The time is right for a United Nations convention against the use of animals in testing cosmetics and cosmetic ingredients, according to European Parliament lawmakers responsible for a resolution advocating a global ban.

Alternatives to animal testing on rabbits, mice, and rats have progressed so much that testing the effects of cosmetics on animals is “Stone Age” by comparison, said Sirpa Pietikainen, a Finnish center-right European Parliament member.

Avon Products Inc., Procter & Gamble Co., and other beauty product companies would support the global phaseout of cosmetics tests on animals, company representatives told Bloomberg Environment Feb. ...
