EU Chemicals Strategy Would Ban Many PFAS, Endocrine Disruptors

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, and chemicals that harm the hormone system, feature large in a 56-point European Union plan of measures to be taken through 2024 to move the bloc towards a toxic-free environment.

PFAS would be banned from consumer products in the EU unless their uses are judged essential, under the plan published Tuesday by the European Commission. Laws on water quality, food contaminants, industrial emissions, and sewage sludge also would be tightened to minimize PFAS discharges into the environment and PFAS buildup in human bodies.
