EU Agency to Screen Chemicals in Drinking Water Products

The European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) will draw up a list of chemicals allowed in pipes, tanks, and other products that come into contact with potable water, as part of the implementation of new European Union rules on water fit for human consumption.

Currently, requirements for water pipes and other products from which chemicals might leach into drinking water are set on a national level by each EU country. Under the new rules, national authorities would still be able to do that, but the ECHA list would act as a baseline that no country could drop below.
