Equity Should Be Part of Nuclear Power Regulation, Senators Say

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission should weigh environmental justice concerns as it confronts aging and decommissioned reactors while assessing new technology and waste storage that can help meet climate goals, Democratic lawmakers said Wednesday.

“I think it is essential for the NRC to bring that focus on equity to their work as we pave the way for a new era of non-polluting and safe nuclear power,” said Sen. Tom Carper (D-Del.), chairman of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee and a founder and co-chair of the Senate Environmental Justice Caucus.
