The EPA is taking its first step toward overhauling the cleanup process for 1,300 Superfund sites with a new short-term plan for Colorado’s Gold King Mine.
The Environmental Protection Agency wants to apply an iterative cleanup approach to contaminated sites across the country, starting with a pilot Superfund site, the Bonita Peak Mining District. The Silverton, Colo., district is home to nearly 50 historic mines or mining-related sources of contamination, including Gold King Mine.
