EPA’s No. 2 Sits Out on Coal Bailout, Energy Star Issues

EPA’s second-in-command can’t participate in policymaking on efforts to prop up existing coal and nuclear plants, as well as appliance energy efficiency programs, the former coal lobbyist said in an official recusal statement.

Andrew Wheeler—who lobbied for several energy companies including coal miner Murray Energy Corp.—told Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Scott Pruitt and ethics officials he won’t engage on the Trump administration’s attempts to bail out existing coal and nuclear plants using the Federal Power Act.

Wheeler’s positions are detailed in a May 24 statement obtained by Bloomberg Environment through a Freedom of Information Act request.
