EPA Warns of Possible Delays in Placing Curbs on Risky Chemicals

The EPA’s efforts to safeguard communities living near facilities releasing certain risky chemicals means the agency may not be able to regulate those chemicals until 2025 or later—at least two years after Congress ordered the rules—the agency’s top chemicals official said Tuesday.

The Environmental Protection Agency decided the delay is needed because “we want to be sure that the rules we write are as protective as they need to be, and are also scientifically and legally defensible,” said Michal Ilana Freedhoff, assistant administrator for chemical safety and pollution prevention at EPA.
