EPA to Require Stormwater Discharge Permit Coverage in Boston

The Environmental Protection Agency will require permit coverage for stormwater discharges from unregulated stormwater pollution sources in the Charles, Mystic, and Neponset River watersheds, according to the agency Wednesday.

The EPA said it will be exercising its “residual designation authority,” a Clean Water Act provision.

One or more general permits specifying the required stormwater reduction activities will likely be issued, which would be released as drafts for public comment, according to the EPA.

The EPA Clean Water Act permit will pertain to certain commercial, industrial, and institutional properties with one or more acres of impervious area, the agency said.
