EPA Seeks to Delay Deadline for Washington Water Quality Review

A lower court’s timeline to consider whether Washington needs updated water quality standards to protect aquatic life should be paused, the EPA and an environmental group told the Ninth Circuit.

The US District Court for the Western District of Washington said the Environmental Protection Agency must “make a necessity determination” by June 27. But completing this review “with the appropriate degree of scientific rigor” can’t be done in the time given, according to a joint motion to stay filed by the agency and Northwest Environmental Advocates in the US Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit.
