The EPA must collect information about the extent to which asbestos and products containing it are used in the U.S., 15 attorneys general told the agency Jan. 31.
Unless the Environmental Protection Agency understands ongoing uses of asbestos, neither it nor the states will be able to protect their residents, the attorneys general said in a petition to acting Administrator Andrew Wheeler. They want the agency to develop a mechanism for getting more information on asbestos through a new reporting rule specific to the mineral and by lifting an exemption for asbestos in an existing regulation.
