The EPA has gathered preliminary data on the thousands of tons of PFAS waste that companies manage, the agency announced Thursday.
The Environmental Protection Agency included per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, or PFAS, in the reporting requirements for its Toxics Release Inventory for the first time last year.
- Companies reported managing more than 700,000 pounds of production-related PFAS waste.
- Fewer than 40 facilities reported PFAS discharges. The Environmental Working Group said the number likely leaves out facilities handling “de minimis” concentrations of the chemical, where PFAS account for less than 1% of the total mixture.
