EPA Escapes Looming Deadline for Washington Water Quality Review

The Environmental Protection Agency doesn’t need to quickly decide whether Washington needs updated water quality standards, the Ninth Circuit said Thursday in granting the agency temporary reprieve from a lower court’s order.

The EPA told the US Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit that it reached an agreement with Northwest Environmental Advocates, which sued after the agency denied their petition to review the state’s standards. The conservation group argued the agency needed to issue updated standards to protect aquatic life.
