Environmentalists Sue for Lake Erie Phosphorus Cutback Timeline

The Environmental Protection Agency should hold Ohio to a strict timeline for reducing phosphorus pollution in algal-bloom-plagued Lake Erie, environmental groups said in a lawsuit.

The Environmental Law & Policy Center and Advocates for a Clean Lake Erie said the EPA violated the Clean Water Act by not requiring Ohio to create a total maximum daily load (TMDL) standard for phosphorus that washes into Lake Erie.

That nutrient has contributed to significant algal blooms in Lake Erie’s western basin in recent years, including in 2013 and 2014 when people got sick from drinking water in the Toledo area. ...
