Environmental Groups Decry Arctic Shipping Fuel Ban as Toothless

An international plan to prohibit the use of common shipping fuel in the Arctic was panned by environmental groups as ineffective and riddled with loopholes.

The International Maritime Organization moved a step closer to banning the use and carriage of heavy fuel oils by ships in the Arctic by July 1, 2024 by approving a series of amendments during a virtual meeting of its Marine Environment Protection Committee Friday.

But a global coalition of environmentalists cited research showing that waivers and exemptions will reduce only 30% of the fuel’s carriage, and 16% of its use, between now and 2029.
