Energy Department to Curb Fossil Fuel Methane, Expand Biofuels

The Energy Department is expanding its research to drive down planet-warming methane emissions from the oil, coal, and gas sector, while ramping up the use of renewable biofuels in ships and planes.

The two research efforts, which Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm unveiled at the White House on Thursday, total nearly $100 million. They were framed as an early but important step in finding cost-effective ways to cut greenhouse gas emissions for sectors where such reductions could be expensive.
