Sharp partisan divides emerged in a March 7 hearing on the endangered right whale, whose survival is central to a debate on offshore oil and gas drilling.

To Democrats on the House Natural Resources Subcommittee on Water, Oceans, and Wildlife, the whale is being sacrificed to fossil fuel companies that want to conduct seismic tests that could injure and possibly kill the mammals.
