Enbridge Must Fight State Regulatory Skirmish Over Line 5 Tunnel

Enbridge Inc. must go through a lengthy process seeking Michigan energy regulators’ approval to build a $500 million tunneled pipeline that would replace the four-mile segment of the company’s Line 5, which lies on the Straits of Mackinac lake bed between Lake Michigan and Lake Huron, a state commission ruled Tuesday.

The Michigan Public Service Commission denied Enbridge a declaratory ruling that it need not secure additional approval from state energy regulators to build the tunneled pipeline replacement.
