Enbridge Agrees to ‘Explore’ Line 5 Replacement in Michigan

Enbridge Inc. entered into a second agreement with Michigan and committed to a “range of measures” that will protect the state’s Straits of Mackinac waterways and Great Lakes, the Calgary, Canada, energy company said.

Line 5 is a major oil pipeline that moves petroleum from Western Canada to Eastern Canada via the Great Lakes.

One of the new measures will include “exploring with the state a new pipeline in a tunnel deep under the straits.” The tunnel under lake bed will feature a new pipeline and reduce chance of oil release or anchor strike to near zero.
