Embattled Oil Refinery Faces Additional Monitoring Requirements

The Virgin Islands refinery that the EPA temporarily shut down for spewing oil and sparking accidental fires now faces new monitoring requirements to ensure it can safely be brought back online.

The St. Croix-based Limetree Bay refinery must submit an installment plan for additional air monitors within 15 days of a letter that the Environmental Protection Agency sent on Wednesday.

The agency said the requirement will help ensure the refinery’s compliance in a pollution-burdened community in line with EPA’s environmental justice goals.
