Disaster Areas Exempted From Solar Panel Rule in California

California homeowners rebuilding their houses after wildfires, flooding, and other declared disasters won’t have to install solar panels as part of new construction, according to a bill Gov. Gavin Newsom signed Sept. 6.

Communities in California devastated by catastrophic wildfires and flood “are desperate to get their lives back on track and to rebuild their homes,” Newsom said in a signing message. "[This bill] should hasten that effort by temporarily suspending the new building requirement to include solar on new home building.”
