Denmark Mulls Ban on Fluorochemicals in Paper Food Wrappers

Denmark is considering a ban on per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in all cardboard and paper materials that come into contact with food, the nation’s environmental agency said Feb. 6.

PFAS provide waterproof and grease-resistant properties to food packaging that is typically used by fast-food outlets and producers of microwaveable products.

If implemented, Denmark would become the first nation in the world to introduce such a ban, the agency said.

PFAS chemicals have been associated with kidney cancer, testicular cancer, ulcerative colitis, thyroid disease, high cholesterol, and high blood pressure during pregnancy at sufficient levels of exposure.
