Defense Official Outlines Unknowns of Search for New Fire Foam

A provision in Pentagon budget legislation would require swapping out chemicals used to fight fires by 2029, but open-ended research on effective substitutes makes it hard to guarantee a timeline for a switch, a military environmental official said.

The military is exploring alternatives to using fluorinated chemicals to fight jet-fuel fires on air bases and Navy ships, but it is difficult to guarantee a date when effective substitutes could be adopted, according to the official.
