Cut Out From Federal Data, California Seeks Automaker Assist

California regulators are telling automakers they need more information to have substantive negotiations with the Trump administration over future fuel economy limits.

The California Air Resources Board is seeking data from automakers about how they will comply with forthcoming fuel economy standards, including future product plans and sales expectations of zero emission vehicles. The direct request to automakers suggests Trump officials are restricting the Golden State’s access to data—even as California officials say the tone of negotiations over the standards has shifted slightly for the better.
