Court Refuses to Revive Obama-Era Coal Leasing Moratorium

A federal court won’t reinstate an Obama-era moratorium on new coal leasing—at least for now.

The U.S. District Court for the District of Montana on Friday rejected a request from environmental groups to scrap the Trump administration’s decision to lift the freeze on leasing federal land for coal. The court said they’d have to raise their latest complaints in a new lawsuit.

A lawyer for the environmental coalition said they’re considering next steps.

The Interior Department reversed the leasing freeze in 2017, but the district court in 2019 ruled that it hadn’t properly considered the environmental impacts of that decision....
