Corteva Sues Syngenta for Patent Damages on Corn-Breeding Tech

Corteva Inc. alleges that Syngenta Group’s seeds unit makes in the US, and imports from Guatemala and Chile, hybrid varieties of corn produced using a process that infringes a patent for a way to speed up such breeding programs by several years.

Syngenta Seeds LLC has made “doubled haploid” maize plants, including seeds, using the method since at least October 2014, when the patent was issued, according to a complaint filed Thursday in the US District Court for the District of Delaware by Corteva’s Pioneer Hi-Bred International Inc. and E.I. du Pont de Nemours and Co. subsidiaries.
