The Interior Department on Tuesday published its final approval for a plan allowing ConocoPhillips Alaska to produce 590 million barrels of oil over 30 years in the National Petroleum Reserve-Alaska.
The project would represent a small fraction of total U.S. oil production compared to current levels. The U.S. produced 4.47 billion barrels of oil in 2019, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration.
The final decision for the Willow Master Development Plan was signed Monday by Interior Secretary David Bernhardt.
ConocoPhillips Alaska didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.
