Seattle-based transportation companies illegally discharged oil into the Lower Duwamish River and Elliott Bay, the United States alleged in a new complaint seeking to hold the companies liable for the cleanup costs of the affected areas.
According to a consent decree filed along with the complaint, the parties already reached a settlement agreement that requires the companies to pay about $31,528 to the United States and $556,250 for natural resource damages. They also must fund a portion of a restoration project, the decree says.
