Colorado Coal Mine Should Flare Methane, Not Vent, Court Told

The Trump administration should have considered requiring an Arch Coal Inc. mine in western Colorado to burn off methane gas to reduce the climate change impacts of the facility, as opposed to just letting it release the gas directly into the atmosphere, environmental groups told a federal appeals court Sept. 26.

The federal government and Mountain Coal Co., the Arch subsidiary that operates the West Elk Mine near Somerset, Colo., countered that economic concerns drove the decision to allow the facility to vent methane instead of flaring it.
