Climate Risk Should Bear on State Dep’t Development Work, GAO Says

The State Department should develop clear guidance for how to assess climate change-related risks, particularly related to human migration, in its international development work, the investigative arm of Congress said in a Jan. 17 report.

Under the Trump administration, the State Department has moved away from including information on climate change risks when crafting strategies on development work in other countries. The State Department didn’t offer any guidance to development missions in 2018 about how to account for climate change risks, the Government Accountability Office found in its report.
