Cleanup Plan for Toxic Texas Site Less Protective, Companies Say

International Paper and McGinnes Industrial Maintenance Corp. are objecting to EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt’s plan for the first of nine Superfund ‘mega-sites’ he’s targeted for cleanup.

Both companies are the potentially responsible parties the Environmental Protection Agency has identified for the San Jacinto River Waste Pits Superfund site in Channelview, Texas, and say Pruitt’s Oct. 11 plan is less protective for downstream communities.

The final plan involves excavating more than 212,000 cubic yards of contaminated waste, including dioxins, generated in the bleaching of wood pulp to make paper. The EPA considers this family of compounds...
