Civil Rights Review Sought for Pesticide Use in Hawaii

The Environmental Protection Agency and Agriculture Department should review how pesticide use in Hawaii affects native communities, Earthjustice said in civil rights complaint to the agencies.

The petition, filed Sept. 14 on behalf of Moms On a Mission (MOM) Hui and Pōnullai Wai Ola/West Kauanulli Watershed Alliance, argues that the Hawaii Department of Agriculture and the Hawaii Agribusiness Development Corporation are violating Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 by facilitating the drift of pesticides into Native Hawaiian communities.
