China’s Qinghai Province Leading Shift Away From Coal

China’s sparsely populated northwestern province of Qinghai has been running mostly on renewable energy from hydropower, wind, and solar this summer, with nine of its 10 coal-fired power units not operating over the past three months, state-run media report.

This comes on the heels of the province setting a record of 15 straight days of generating energy solely from renewable sources between from June 9-23. The province had a nine-day run in 2018 and a seven-day run in 2017.
