China to Expand Largest Water Diversion Project in History

China will aim to increase transfers from the water-rich south to the water-stressed north as the country implements phase two of the largest water diversion project in history.

In the first phase, since 2014, the project supplied cities in the north faced with severe groundwater overextraction, such as Beijing and Tianjin, with 30 billion cubic meters (7.8 trillion gallons) of water over the first five years of operation, and directly benefited 120 million people, Ministry of Water Resources officials said at a Dec. 12 briefing.
