China Relaxes Environmental Rules to Curb Virus’s Economic Hit

A swath of industries in China can dodge some environmental rules to get a short-term economic boost amid the new coronavirus outbreak, China’s environment ministry announced.

The government will waive environmental impact assessment rules and remove requirements for on-site environmental inspections through September, according to the announcement last week.

The waivers aim to improve production and operations as the country deals with the economic fallout from the ongoing Covid-19 outbreak that has restricted transport, logistics, and factory restarts since early February.
