China May Use New Tool in Prosecuting Fujian Chemical Spill

Authorities in South China’s Fujian province will prosecute eight people in relation to a leak of a solvent that hospitalized more than 50 people and damaged equipment.

Prosecutors may use a new tool to force the defendants to pay the cleanup bill, under procedures the Supreme People’s Court announced earlier this month that gives local governments the authority to sue companies for environmental damages, a spokeswoman for the People’s Procuratorate of Quangang, District of Quanzhou told Bloomberg Environment June 12.
