SANTIAGO—Chile’s environmental regulator (Superintendencia del Medio Ambiente, or SMA) has suspended sanctions against the mining company Teck Quebrada Blanca, a subsidiary of Canada’s Teck, for a fuel spill, after the company submitted a plan to clean up damage and prevent future accidents, the body said April 4.
SMA brought charges against Teck Quebrada Blanca on Feb. 13 for breaches of its environmental license at the Quebrada Blanca copper mine after the company reported the spill, which spread for 37 kilometers (23 miles) downstream from the high-altitude mine’s water treatment plant.
