Chile Redraws Patagonia National Park, Allowing Gold Exploration

Chile will rework the boundaries of the sprawling new Patagonia National Park to allow exploration for gold and silver.

Under an agreement reached with local communities, the redrawn boundaries of the proposed Patagonia National Park will no longer include state lands previously staked by Australian mining company Equus Mining Ltd., National Assets Minister Felipe Ward said.

In addition, the ministry said it reached agreement with the National Forest Corporation, which manages Chile’s protected areas, to allow about 100 local farmers to continue grazing cattle and sheep in upland pastures in the area.
