Canada Relaxes Ship Restrictions Meant to Protect Whales

Canada will reduce the size of an area in its Atlantic waters where shipping restrictions intended to protect endangered North Atlantic right whales are in place.

Tankers and cruise ships will have to obey speed limits to avoid striking whales in a smaller area than in 2018, while a fishing moratorium will cover an area 63 per cent smaller than last year’s, Transport Minister Marc Garneau and Fisheries and Oceans Minister Jonathan Wilkinson announced Feb. 7.
