Canada Closes Loophole on Hazardous Waste Exports

Canada closed a loophole in governing its hazardous waste exports rule to address situations where countries, other than the U.S., turn away pre-authorized shipments.

The amendments to the Export and Import of Hazardous Waste and Hazardous Recyclable Material Regulations expand the regulations to cover wastes and recyclable materials collected from households, the government said Nov. 2.

The regulations give shippers 90 days to return such waste to Canada, or to find an alternate facility acceptable under the Basel Convention.
