California Water Transfer Program Risks Water Supply, Suit Says

The U.S. Bureau of Reclamation and a local water authority approved a water transfer project in California without proper environmental review, jeopardizing freshwater in the Sacramento and San Joaquin Delta, water management and conservation groups say in a federal lawsuit filed in California.

The water transfer project at issue would move water from sellers upstream of the delta to buyers south of the delta.

The delta already faces problems of inadequate water supplies, impaired water quality, and degraded aquatic habitats, and the project will make it worse by reducing the flow of freshwater into the delta, according to the lawsuit...
