California Water District to Probe Raising Dam Despite Settlement

The largest agricultural water district in the United States is going to review the environmental effects of raising California’s Shasta Dam despite a settlement with California’s Attorney General, who opposes the planned federal project.

The Westlands Water District and Attorney General Xavier Becerra agreed to a settlement Nov. 7 that bars the district from doing an environmental review under the state’s Endangered Quality Act (CEQA) law. It also prevents the water district from funding actions intended to raise the dam, or signing agreements to assist in planing or construction.
