California Tunnels Plan Draws Warnings of Dirty Water, Empty Towns

California’s ambitious $17 billion plan to build two water conveyance tunnels is raising alarms among advocacy groups who say it could lead to abandoned towns, ruined grape harvests, closed businesses, destroyed recreation, and contaminated drinking water in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta.

Opponents of the state’s WaterFix plan to update its 50-year-old water delivery infrastructure testified during a public hearing Oct. 24 and urged the Delta Stewardship Council to send the public works project back to the California Department of Water Resources for revision.
