California Reviews—But Won’t Ban—Dow Pesticide as Usage Drops

California could restrict—but won’t ban—the use of a disputed pesticide on many fruit and vegetable crops after a state review panel weighs in on its toxicity.

The upcoming June review follows a steep decrease of chlorpyrifos use in the state as farmers shift to alternatives in their orchards, row crops, and nut trees.

Dow AgroSciences saw a 38.6 percent reduction in chlorpyrifos application from 2013 to 2016 in California, according to the state Department of Pesticide Regulation’s report on pesticide use patterns.
