California Renewables Plan Targeted for Lifting Land Protections

The Interior Department wants to lift protections for a Delaware-sized chunk of environmentally sensitive federal land in California by amending a renewable energy and land use plan for the region.

The draft proposal is outlined in a Federal Register notice scheduled to be published Thursday. It updates a 2016 plan for the California Desert Conservation Area and associated renewable energy development plan. It would abolish 32 “areas of critical environmental concern,” or ACECs, across 1.8 million acres of Bureau of Land Management land in southern California, and shrink the boundaries of others.
