California Regulates Carpets, Rugs With ‘Forever Chemicals’

Companies making and selling carpets and rugs containing “forever chemicals” must notify California’s Department of Toxic Substances starting Thursday and take one of several actions to limit their presence in the state.

The state added these household and office products to its list of “priority products” regulated under its Safer Consumer Products regulations if they contain any of a broad definition of per- or polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS).

The Carpet and Rug Institute, which represents manufacturers and related industries, didn’t immediately respond to a query about California’s regulation.
