California Pushes 50% Recycled Content in Plastic Bottles

Manufacturers selling plastic bottles in California would have 10 years to make sure their products are made of 50% post-consumer recycled plastic, if Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) signs a bill passed by the legislature Sunday night.

AB 793, would also give the California Department of Resources Recycling and Recovery, known as CalRecycle, the authority to audit, investigate, and take enforcement action against manufacturers that do not comply with the law.

Assembly member Phil Ting (D), who authored the bill, said the bill was intended to encourage efficient recycling, increase demand for scrap plastic, and keep bottles out of landfills. ...
