California Eyes Tighter Regulation of Shampoo, Laundry Chemical

California environmental health officials are taking a closer look at a probable carcinogen found in personal care and cleaning products like shampoo, laundry detergent, and soap.

The California Department of Toxic Substances Control is considering adding the solvent 1,4-dioxane to its list of chemicals regulated under its Safer Consumer Products Regulations.

If added to the list, manufacturers would have to research if there are safer chemical alternatives to use if the level of 1,4-dioxane in their product exceeds a threshold set by the state.
